About RFB files

The .RFB extension primarily signifies a Remote Framebuffer session recording, captured by VNC (Virtual Network Computing) software like TigerVNC or RealVNC. Unlike standard video files (MP4, AVI), these files contain a raw stream of screen updates and protocol messages. This means they are completely incompatible with standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. To view them, users typically must replay the session using the specific VNC client that recorded it, creating significant friction for sharing or archiving. Converting these recordings to MP4 or WebP is essential for web playback and universal accessibility.

A secondary but critical use case involves medical physics, where .RFB files store radiotherapy beam data generated by IBA Dosimetry OmniPro-Accept software or RaySearch RayStation. These are highly specialized data files used to calibrate cancer treatment machines. Users often need to convert this proprietary data into CSV, Excel, or TXT formats for independent analysis or import into other medical systems. Lastly, legacy users of RoboForm may encounter this extension as an outdated bookmark or passcard file, which should be converted to modern HTML or RFP formats for security.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RFB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RBF, ZIP, VTX, AGS and BAI files.

The RFB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RFB converter.
