About RFB files
The .rfb file extension primarily represents a Remote Framebuffer session recording used by Virtual Network Computing (VNC) software like TigerVNC and OpenVNC. These files capture screen interactions, keystrokes, and mouse movements during a remote desktop session using the Remote Framebuffer protocol. Secondary uses include .rfb files acting as Passcard bookmark files for RoboForm and Radiotherapy beam data files for RayStation.
You usually need to convert .rfb files because they rely on highly specific, proprietary playback or parsing mechanisms. VNC recordings are not standard video files; they are streams of network protocol messages. This means you cannot open them directly in a standard media player or web browser. Sharing these recordings is difficult because recipients must install a compatible VNC player. Similarly, RoboForm bookmarks are locked into the Siber Systems ecosystem and are heavily encrypted.
If you have an RFB session recording, your ideal conversion target is a standard video format like MP4 or AVI. RoboForm files should ideally be exported to CSV for use in open-source password managers. However, standard video converters cannot process RFB protocol streams directly. Converting a VNC session usually requires playing the file in a native VNC client and recording the screen with capture software.
Because these formats are highly specialized or encrypted, converting an .rfb file with standard online converters generally fails. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RFB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to RFB, try TigerVNC or another comparable tool in the "Remote Desktop Session Recording" category.
The RFB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RFB converter.
