The .rdw extension represents a fragmented landscape of file formats, most commonly serving as a vector drawing file for legacy applications like OSCAR CAD or Ashlar-Vellum. However, you may also encounter this extension as a proprietary document generated by SoftPro for real estate closings, or a specialized road design file created by CGS Labs Plateia software.

The main issue with .rdw files is distinct software lock-in; a file created in Real-DRAW by MediaChance cannot be opened by Road Designer or Bentley Systems viewers. This lack of interoperability makes them unsuitable for sharing or long-term archiving.

To bypass the need for expensive or discontinued software, the best workflow is converting these files to universal standards. For preserving visual layouts in SoftPro or legacy CAD files, convert to PDF or PDF/A. If you need to recover vector geometry from drawing files for use in modern tools like AutoCAD, converting to DXF or DWG is essential. For web previews, a raster conversion to JPG or PNG is recommended.
