To convert other file formats to the "3D Scan Mesh Asset" file type, you need software like Autodesk ReCap or a similar tool.
The .RCM file extension is primarily used for Reality Capture Mesh models generated by Autodesk ReCap and used within AutoCAD. These files store dense 3D mesh geometry created from photogrammetry or laser scans. Under the hood, many of these files are simply structured ZIP archives containing raw assets like textures and geometry data.
The main disadvantage of the .RCM format is that it is strictly proprietary and locked into the Autodesk ecosystem. These files routinely exceed gigabytes in size, making them difficult to share or store efficiently. Without an expensive monthly subscription to Autodesk software, viewing or editing the 3D model is nearly impossible. They are not supported by standard web browsers, and generic 3D viewers cannot parse the internal directory structure.
To use the 3D data in standard pipelines like Blender or Unity, you need to convert the file to OBJ, FBX, or STL. However, direct conversion is challenging because the proprietary coordinate systems and UV mapping can be lost outside of native Autodesk tools. This makes the file format notoriously difficult to open or convert with generic software.
Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software can properly read or export the 3D data. Because our analysis can detect the underlying ZIP container - or alternative formats like disguised PDF bank statements - we can often extract the internal content, bypassing the proprietary blocks.
