About RAT files

The .rat file extension is a notorious source of confusion because it is shared by three completely distinct software ecosystems, none of which are compatible with standard system tools.

  1. Game Audio: In titles developed by Relic Entertainment (such as Company of Heroes), a .rat file functions as a Relic Audio Tool container. These proprietary archives bundle sound effects and voice lines, but they are completely unreadable by standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player.
  2. Statistical Data: In research and government audit environments, the file likely contains Relational Attribute Text or statistical datasets used by software like RAT-STATS or older versions of Stata. These files lock raw data into a rigid, non-human-readable binary or text format that Microsoft Excel cannot open natively, creating a significant barrier for data analysis.
  3. Compressed Archives: Frequently, a .rat file is simply a Roshal Archive (RAR) that has been misnamed or is part of a split-volume set. In this state, the operating system fails to recognize it as a compressed folder, preventing extraction.

Best Conversion Targets:
For data analysis, converting the statistical content to CSV or XLSX is critical for accessibility in modern spreadsheet software. For game assets, extracting the internal audio streams to WAV or MP3 is the only way to listen to the content. For misnamed archives, identifying the header and converting to a standard ZIP or correctly named RAR resolves the access issue instantly.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RAT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RAR, PNG, JPG, ZIP, EXE, CONTACT, MSI and LOG files.
