About QT files
The .QT file extension represents the QuickTime Movie format, a multimedia container developed by Apple capable of storing video, audio, text, and effects. While functionally identical to the more common MOV file, the .QT extension is legacy nomenclature often found on older Apple systems. A significant minority of .QT files (approx. 10%) are JSON-formatted game save data for Village Rhapsody, unrelated to video playback.
Users commonly have issues with .QT videos because they rely on the QuickTime framework, which Microsoft no longer supports on Windows, leading to potential security vulnerabilities and playback errors. Furthermore, the format is not natively supported by HTML5 web browsers or Android devices, making sharing difficult. To resolve these compatibility and security constraints, we recommend converting .QT videos to MP4 (H.264) for universal playback on modern screens and web platforms. For editing in non-linear editors like Adobe Premiere Pro, converting to ProRes or DNxHD inside a MOV container ensures high fidelity. If the file is a Village Rhapsody save, it is a text-based JSON file that can be opened with any text editor.

The QT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our QT converter.
