The .QDP extension primarily identifies a QDA Miner project file, a proprietary format used by Provalis Research software for qualitative data analysis. These files function as complex containers - often internally structured as ZIP archives - that link source documents, coding schemes, variables, and memos into a single research environment.
The Problem: The main issue with .QDP files is their software dependency. You cannot open them without QDA Miner (or the free Lite viewer), making them useless for collaborators using Excel, SPSS, or competing analysis tools like NVivo. Furthermore, a significant minority of .QDP files are legacy Meto Quick Draw barcode label designs. These are virtually impossible to open on modern operating systems without the original, outdated driver software, leaving your label layouts trapped in an obsolete format.
The Solution: For QDA Miner projects, the goal is usually data extraction or report sharing. Converting the dataset to XLSX (Excel) or CSV allows you to perform statistical analysis in standard tools, while converting reports to PDF or DOCX ensures universal readability. For legacy Meto label files, the only practical archiving strategy is conversion to PDF or a high-resolution image format like PNG or TIFF to preserve the visual design without maintaining the old software environment.
