About MTP files

The .mtp file extension typically represents a Labeling Project File created by Weidmüller M-Print PRO (or Murrplastik ACS), software used in industrial engineering to design markers for electrical cabinets, terminals, and cables. These files contain layout data, text, and symbol references that are proprietary and cannot be opened by standard image viewers or text editors. This creates a bottleneck when sharing designs with clients or production teams who do not have the paid licensing for the specific labeling software.

A secondary but critical industrial definition is the Module Type Package (MTP), governed by the VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658 standard. In this context, the .mtp file is actually a ZIP container holding Automation Markup Language (AML) files, used to integrate process equipment into control systems ('Plug & Produce'). Engineers often need to validate the contents of these packages without deploying them.

Conversion Targets:

For Labeling (Weidmüller/Murrplastik): The best approach is to convert the .mtp project to PDF using the native software's 'Print' function (selecting a PDF printer). This ensures the layout is preserved for proofing.
For Automation (NAMUR): Since these are ZIP archives, you can often simply rename the extension from .mtp to .zip to extract and view the internal XML/AML data using a text editor or browser.
For Audio: Rarely, an .mtp file may be a MadTracker 2 Pattern. These should be converted to WAV or MP3 within MadTracker for wider compatibility.
