About PVG files
The .PVG file extension is a specialized, proprietary format that is extremely frustrating to handle because it serves two entirely different, highly niche industrial purposes. Depending on its source, it is either an XML-based vector graphic for SCADA interfaces or a project view state for 3D laser surveying software. Both versions suffer from severe ecosystem lock-in.
In industrial automation, a .PVG file functions as a SCADA HMI vector graphic. Used primarily by WellinTech KingView and ProviewR, these files map out visual representations of machinery, pipes, and sensors on Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs). The major disadvantage of this format is its strict reliance on the host SCADA software. Because it contains proprietary scripting and real-time data bindings, standard vector editors like Adobe Illustrator cannot render it properly, despite the file being formatted in standard XML.
Alternatively, in civil engineering and surveying, a .PVG file represents a Point Cloud View Group. Software like Topcon MAGNET Collage or Pointivo uses these files to save visualization states, groupings, and metadata for massive 3D laser scan datasets. The critical real-world limit here is that the .PVG does not contain the actual 3D point cloud data (which resides in separate LAS or LAZ files). Without the original heavy-duty application and the accompanying source files, a Topcon .PVG file is essentially an empty, unreadable shell.
Because this is a closed, proprietary format heavily dependent on industrial software, standard online converters fail to process it. Conversion targets depend entirely on the file's origin. For SCADA graphics, extracting the XML data to SVG or PDF is the best approach, though all interactive HMI animations will be lost. For Topcon files, you cannot convert them directly to 3D meshes like OBJ because they lack geometric data.
Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our analyzer will inspect the file's binary or XML signature to tell you exactly which type of .PVG you have, helping you extract readable text or embedded underlying formats without needing an expensive software license.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PVG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PVG file to SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, JPG, CDR, WMF, EMF, SWF, FLA, XFL or SKETCH, you can use WellinTech KingView or similar software from the "SCADA Graphics & 3D Surveying" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert AFPUB, EPS, FIG, VSD, SKETCH, VDX, AFPHOTO, PDF, AFDESIGN, SVG, VSDX or AI files to PVG, try WellinTech KingView or another comparable tool in the "SCADA Graphics & 3D Surveying" category.
The PVG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PVG converter.
