The .EYB file is a proprietary data container used to deliver monthly or yearly content updates for Microsoft Encarta, a digital multimedia encyclopedia. These files allowed users on dial-up or offline systems to keep their CD-ROM or DVD encyclopedias current with recent global events.
These update files were designed exclusively for Microsoft Encarta. Because the software was officially discontinued in 2009, native tools to read or export the data are obsolete.
Users typically need to convert .EYB files to extract historical articles, research data, and embedded images. The primary disadvantage of the format is its closed, undocumented nature. It cannot be opened by modern web browsers, standard text editors, or standard archive extractors. You cannot simply double-click the file on a modern operating system.
