About PTXT files
The .PTXT file format has two distinct and highly specific uses. It is either an encrypted text document managed by Microsoft Information Protection (MIP), or it is a session template built for Avid Pro Tools.
Microsoft Purview uses .PTXT files to enforce strict access policies on text data, preventing unauthorized reading or copying. Alternatively, Avid Pro Tools creates .PTXT files to save reusable studio environments, including track routing, mixer settings, and plugin configurations.
Both formats come with severe disadvantages. Microsoft .PTXT files are restricted by Digital Rights Management (DRM); they are completely unreadable unless you authenticate with the correct corporate credentials. Pro Tools templates lock you into the Avid ecosystem, require an expensive software subscription to access, and notably do not contain any actual audio media. Standard text editors, browsers, and media players cannot open either version.
If you need to share the data, you must convert the source file. Authorized users of MIP files should copy the content into an unprotected TXT or DOCX file. For Pro Tools templates, users must open the session in Pro Tools and export the data as an AAF or OMF file, which allows the timeline to be imported into other DAWs like Logic Pro or Ableton Live.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to process. The data is either heavily encrypted by Microsoft or written in Avid's proprietary binary format. Therefore, standard online converters fail to process them. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PTXT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PTXT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PTXT converter.
