About PTN files
The .PTN extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," used by three distinct industries for entirely different purposes, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, these are Thumbnail Cache files generated by older document management or graphics software like Nuance PaperPort and Serif PagePlus. In this context, the file is a proprietary database of tiny preview images; it is not meant to be opened directly, and deleting it simply forces the software to regenerate the previews. Users often struggle trying to "view" these files, not realizing they are merely system artifacts.
However, in professional settings, a .PTN file is often critical data. In healthcare, it represents EEG Pattern Information created by Nihon Kohden monitoring systems. These binary files contain vital neurological waveform data that is locked into a proprietary format, making it inaccessible to standard statistical software like MATLAB or Excel without conversion. Similarly, in the fashion and manufacturing industries, .PTN files are CAD patterns used by Lectra Modaris or Optitex for fabric cutting. These files often fail to open in standard CAD tools like AutoCAD due to specific industry encoding.
For Thumbnail files, conversion is rarely necessary; if you need the images, you should locate the original source documents. For EEG Data, the best workflow is converting the file to EDF (European Data Format) or CSV for analysis. For CAD/Apparel patterns, the industry standard for interoperability is converting .PTN to DXF or PDF for plotting.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PTN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PTN file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use PaperPort or Nihon Kohden or similar software from the "Thumbnail Cache & Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to PTN, try PaperPort or Nihon Kohden or another comparable tool in the "Thumbnail Cache & Data" category.
The PTN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PTN converter.
