The .PTN file extension is highly fragmented and used across several completely different industries. Most commonly, it acts as an EEG pattern information file generated by the Nihon Kohden EEG-1000/9000 systems to store patient brainwave data. Alternatively, graphics programs like Paint Shop Pro and Serif PhotoPlus use it as a thumbnail database cache or custom pattern file. It is also found in manufacturing as a CAD apparel pattern for Lectra Modaris or an eyeglass frame trace file for LINDBERG.
Because .PTN is a closed, proprietary format in almost all these use cases, users face massive disadvantages. You cannot easily open medical EEG files or proprietary apparel CAD patterns without expensive, highly specialized software that often requires a costly subscription or license. Sharing these files with clients or external teams is practically impossible without exporting them first. When used as thumbnail caches, these files are completely system-dependent, offer no actual value to the user, and often bloat the hard drive.
If you need to share the data, converting a CAD .PTN to standard DXF or an image pattern to PNG or JPG is highly recommended. Medical files might need exporting to CSV or standard EDF (European Data Format). However, standard online converters completely fail to process .PTN files because they lack the proprietary algorithms required to read them.
