About POPX files

A .POPX file is a proprietary container format used by PaperPort, a document management application now developed by Tungsten Automation (formerly Kofax/Nuance). Unlike standard PDF files, a .POPX acts as a wrapper or "stack" that groups multiple scanned items - documents, photos, or receipts - into a single object for the PaperPort desktop interface.

The catch with .POPX files is their lack of interoperability. While excellent for organizing stacks within the specific software, these files are virtually useless if you send them to a colleague who does not have PaperPort installed. They simply cannot open the file. Furthermore, the format is essentially a ZIP archive containing the actual image data (often in JPG, PNG, or TIFF format) and XML metadata.

For most users, the goal is to extract the trapped documents. For universal sharing and archiving, converting the .POPX to a standard PDF is the best workflow. If the stack contains high-resolution photographs, converting to individual JPG or PNG files preserves the image fidelity for editing in tools like Adobe Photoshop.

Convert.Guru analyzes your POPX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PTN, DOCX and XML files.
