The .PSL extension is a heavily overloaded format used across various industrial and specialized software platforms. Primarily, it acts as a Protection Relay Logic file in GE MiCOM Courier to store grid protection settings. Alternatively, it is utilized as a Machine Diagnostic Session Log by Volvo Construction Equipment, a Scanned Surface File by Hexagon PC-DMIS, or a Logic Controller Project within Rockwell Automation software.
The primary disadvantage of the .PSL format is its deeply proprietary, closed ecosystem. These files lock your configuration data or diagnostic logs inside expensive, highly specialized enterprise software. If you do not hold an active license or lack the precise legacy software version, you cannot natively read or interact with the data. This makes sharing settings or auditing logs incredibly difficult across different engineering teams.
Converting these files to open, human-readable formats like XML, CSV, or TXT is highly desirable so engineers can review settings without the original software suite. Interestingly, certain .PSL files, such as those used for Volvo diagnostic logs, are merely renamed ZIP archives, while Pivot3 surveillance lists are embedded SQL dumps.
