About PRTDOT files

The .PRTDOT file is a proprietary Part Template created by SolidWorks, the industry-standard computer-aided design (CAD) software by Dassault Systèmes. These files function as the foundational "cookie cutters" for new engineering designs, storing pre-configured document properties - such as measurement units (MMGS vs. IPS), material definitions, coordinate systems, and drafting standards - so engineers don't have to manually configure settings for every new 3D part.

While essential for standardization within the SolidWorks ecosystem, .PRTDOT files present significant hurdles outside of it. They are strictly proprietary and typically require a paid SolidWorks subscription (often exceeding thousands of dollars annually) just to open. A major limitation is the strict lack of backward compatibility; a template saved in SolidWorks 2024 cannot be opened in SolidWorks 2023 or older, leading to frequent "Future Version" error messages. Furthermore, because they are templates, they are not directly recognized by 3D printing slicers or general CAD viewers.

To make these files usable, they must usually be instantiated as standard SLDPRT part files. For broader compatibility, users often need to convert the resulting geometry to neutral formats like STEP (STP) or IGES for import into other CAD tools like AutoCAD, or to STL for 3D printing. For documentation or simple viewing purposes without CAD software, converting to PDF or PNG is the most practical archival strategy.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PRTDOT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SLDASM, STL and SLDPRT files.

FAQ

If you want to convert PRTDOT file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use SolidWorks or similar software from the "CAD Part Template" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to PRTDOT, try SolidWorks or another comparable tool in the "CAD Part Template" category.

The PRTDOT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PRTDOT converter.
