About POH files

The .POH file extension is most frequently generated by the now-discontinued Photodex ProShow line of software (specifically Gold and Producer). It serves as an Output History file, functioning essentially as a log that records details about previous publishing jobs - such as burning a slideshow to DVD, creating an executable, or exporting a video.

The Common Friction Point: Users often discover .POH files in their old project folders and mistakenly assume they contain the actual slideshow presentation or the source photos. This is a major pain point: .POH files are typically just a few kilobytes in size and contain no media assets. They cannot be played as videos or opened as project files (which use the PSH extension). Since Photodex closed in 2020, reinstalling the original software to view this metadata is often impossible or impractical due to activation server shutdowns.

Conversion & Solutions:

For ProShow Files: Since these are often text-based or simple binary logs, the best approach is to open them with a robust text editor like Notepad++ to view the data, or convert them to TXT or PDF for archiving.
For Firmware Files: A minority of .POH files are Boot Logos for set-top boxes using ALI Corp chipsets. In this specific case, the file is likely a raster image (often similar to PNG) used during the device startup. These can sometimes be converted to standard JPG or PNG images for viewing or editing in tools like Adobe Photoshop.
