About PIXAR files

The .PIXAR file is an uncompressed raster image format originally developed in 1986 for the legacy Pixar Image Computer workstation. Historically, these files stored RGB or grayscale bitmaps at 8 bits per channel and were used heavily in early computer animation and high-end medical imaging. Today, you can open them using specialized software like XnView MP or Wolfram Mathematica. However, the format is largely obsolete. Because it is strictly uncompressed, .PIXAR files take up an unnecessary amount of disk space. More importantly, it is an outdated proprietary format that is unsupported by modern web browsers, mobile devices, and most standard image editors. Even Pixar's own modern RenderMan software has officially dropped support for the format, encouraging users to switch to modern standards. We highly recommend converting .PIXAR files to universally accepted formats. Convert to JPG for web use, PNG for lossless compression, or TIFF or EXR for high-quality archiving without losing the original color depth. Legacy graphics formats like this are notoriously difficult to open because most modern image tools have stripped out the decoders for them. Standard online converters often fail to process it. Just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal parameters, and convert it to a modern image standard whenever possible.

The PIXAR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIXAR converter.
