About PXR files

The .PXR extension primarily identifies a Pixlr Layered Image, the native project format for Pixlr, a popular cloud-based photo editor. These files save your work-in-progress, preserving layers, masks, text, and non-destructive edits so you can resume editing later in the browser. However, this format is proprietary and functionally useless outside the Pixlr ecosystem. You cannot upload a .PXR file to social media, insert it into a DOCX report, or view it with standard tools like Windows Photos or Apple Preview.

Because .PXR files are essentially locked data containers for a specific web application, users often struggle when trying to share their work. To make the image usable for web or print, you must convert it to a standard format. For general web use and sharing, converting to JPG or PNG is the pragmatic solution. If you need to preserve high-quality data for archiving without the proprietary lock-in, TIFF is preferred.

Note on other formats: Less commonly, .PXR refers to the legacy Pixar Image Computer format, an uncompressed raster file used in high-end 3D rendering workflows (supported by older versions of Adobe Photoshop). It may also appear as an XML-based report stylesheet in Pronto Xi ERP software. Always verify the source of your file before converting.
