Convert PIF to another file type
To convert your PIF file to another format, you need Microsoft Windows or other System software.
Convert a file to PIF
To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Shortcut" file type, you need software like Microsoft Windows or a similar tool.
About PIF files
The .PIF (Program Information File) serves as a legacy configuration format used by Microsoft Windows to define the runtime environment for MS-DOS applications. Unlike standard LNK shortcuts, these binary files dictate hardware emulation settings - such as memory allocation, video mode, and window behavior - required for older software to function within a graphical OS.
Handling .PIF files presents significant challenges today. First, they are a notorious security vector; because Windows historically hides this extension, malicious EXE files are often renamed to .PIF to trick users into executing malware. Second, they are proprietary binary files, meaning you cannot view their target paths or parameters in a standard text editor. Finally, modern 64-bit Windows architectures lack the NTVDM subsystem to process them, rendering them functionally useless for their original purpose.
For safe analysis and archiving, the best approach is to convert .PIF files to TXT (to inspect the binary headers and identify the target executable path safely) or PDF for documentation. If you possess the rare IUPAC Thermodynamic Data Exchange variant, converting to XML or CSV renders the scientific data usable in modern analytics tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PIF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PIF file to EXE, MSI, APP, DMG, DEB, RPM, PKG, RUN, SH, BAT, CMD or COM, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "MS-DOS Environment Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert JAR, APP, SCR, IPA, COM, AAB, PS1, DMG, VBS, EXE, XAPK or MSI files to PIF, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "MS-DOS Environment Configuration" category.
The PIF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIF converter.
