About PI2 files
The .pi2 extension is a notorious "collision" format, shared by three completely different software ecosystems, which often leads to confusion.
- Portrait Innovations Photos (Consumer Use): For most home users, this file is a proprietary, encrypted image format found on CDs provided by the defunct photography chain Portrait Innovations. These files were designed to lock customers into ordering prints solely through the company's kiosk software. Since the company's bankruptcy, accessing these memories is a major downside. They are essentially obfuscated JPEG data that standard viewers cannot render.
- Degas Elite Graphics (Retro Use): In the realm of vintage computing, a .pi2 file is a medium-resolution (640x200, 4 colors) raster image created by Degas Elite on the Atari ST. These are uncompressed bitmaps that modern operating systems do not support natively.
- Allplan Project Data (Professional Use): In the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) industry, this file represents project data or SmartParts used by Nemetschek Allplan. These are complex CAD data files, not simple images.
Conversion Advice:
- For Portrait Innovations: You typically need to convert these to standard JPG or PNG for archiving. Due to the encryption, standard converters often fail; specialized recovery scripts or legacy viewers are often required before a standard conversion is possible.
- For Degas: These should be converted to PNG to preserve the pixel-perfect retro aesthetic without compression artifacts. Modern tools like XnView MP often handle these legacy formats well.
- For Allplan: Do not attempt to convert these to images directly. They must be exported to PDF or IFC from within the Allplan environment to ensure scale and layer accuracy.

The PI2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PI2 converter.
