About PI2 files

A .PI2 file most commonly represents a Portrait Innovations Photo archive or an Allplan Project Data File. It is also used as a legacy format for PhotoImpact Images, OS/2 TrueType Fonts, and ScanMaster-ELM diagnostic parameters.

For former Portrait Innovations customers, the .PI2 format is a massive headache. The photography company closed down in 2020, leaving thousands of parents with proprietary CD-ROMs that cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Apple Preview or Windows Photos. The images are locked inside a proprietary wrapper. Similarly, .PI2 files generated by Allplan require an expensive, active CAD software subscription to open or edit the part models and project data.

To regain access to your locked family photos, you must convert the .PI2 files to standard, universally supported image formats. For general viewing, printing, and sharing, convert to JPG. For lossless archiving, convert to PNG. If you are dealing with Allplan CAD files, converting the data to DXF or PDF is recommended for sharing with non-Allplan users.
