Convert PF to another file type
To convert PF Prefetch files to another format, you need Microsoft Windows or other System software.
Convert a file to PF
To convert other file formats to the "Prefetch Cache File" file type, you need software like Microsoft Windows or a similar tool.
About PF files
A .PF file is primarily a Windows Prefetch cache file generated by the Microsoft Windows operating system. The system creates these files in the C:\Windows\Prefetch directory to map the files and resources an application loads during startup, significantly reducing application launch times. In a smaller subset of cases, .pf files are game data package archives used by the Perfect World Angelica Engine.
Opening or converting a .PF file is notoriously difficult because it is a proprietary, undocumented binary format. In modern versions of Windows, these files are heavily compressed using XPRESS or LZX algorithms. Standard online converters completely fail to process them because they are not documents or media files. You cannot simply open a .pf file in a standard text editor like Notepad; you will only see garbled text and a MAM file signature. To properly parse the data, digital forensic investigators rely on specialized utilities like WinPrefetchView or Eric Zimmerman's PECmd.
Users typically need to convert or read .PF files for system auditing, malware analysis, or digital forensics to determine exactly when an application was executed. The best conversion targets for this data are structured text formats like CSV, TXT, or XML, which allow the execution logs and file paths to be analyzed in a spreadsheet.
Because this file format is closed and strictly tied to the Windows OS kernel, traditional conversion is impossible. If our analysis detects supported embedded data or uncompressed strings, partial viewing or data extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PF file to NF, F, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB or ACE, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "System Application Cache" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to PF, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "System Application Cache" category.
The PF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PF converter.
