A .PEZ file is a legacy portable presentation archive created by Prezi Desktop. Unlike traditional linear slideshows like PowerPoint, Prezi relies on a zooming, non-linear virtual canvas. The .PEZ format was used to bundle the presentation's paths, structural XML files, and all multimedia assets into a single package for offline editing and presenting.
Historically, these files could only be created and opened natively using the desktop versions of the Prezi software for Windows or Mac. The format was specifically designed so users didn't need an internet connection to present their dynamic slides.
The main disadvantage of the .PEZ format today is massive proprietary lock-in. Since Prezi shifted to its web-first 'Prezi Next' platform, legacy .PEZ files have become practically obsolete, locked behind discontinued software versions and premium subscription walls. Furthermore, because these files pack all high-resolution video and image assets inside a single container, they easily exceed 100MB, making them frustrating to share or email.
The best conversion targets are usually PDF for a static, printable summary, or MP4 to capture the dynamic zooming animations as a video. If you just need to recover the raw assets, converting it to a ZIP archive is the most pragmatic solution. However, attempting to convert these to traditional formats like PPTX often results in a total loss of the signature zooming transitions.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because of its unique, proprietary zooming paths that lack a direct equivalent in standard document types. Often, only the original Prezi software can properly read or export the intended visual layout and sequence.
