Extract text from portable documents (PD_)
To convert PD_ documents to another format, you need Adobe Acrobat or other Page Layout software.
To convert other file formats to the "Renamed PDF Document" file type, you need software like Adobe Acrobat or a similar tool.
A .pd_ file is almost always a renamed, compressed, or partially downloaded Portable Document Format (.PDF) file. System administrators and users often change the last letter of a file extension to an underscore to bypass strict email attachment filters or antivirus scans. In older Microsoft Windows environments, the underscore indicates a compressed file created by the makecab utility.
To read the document, the file must usually be renamed to PDF and opened with standard readers like Adobe Acrobat, web browsers, or programmatic libraries like iTextSharp.
The main disadvantage of the .pd_ format is that the operating system cannot recognize it automatically. Double-clicking the file will prompt a confusing "Open with..." dialog instead of launching a reader. If it is an actively downloading file, it is incomplete and completely useless until the transfer finishes. If it was compressed via Microsoft CAB tools, users must manually extract it using the command line expand tool.
The immediate conversion target is a standard PDF. From there, it can be reliably converted to DOCX for editing in Microsoft Word or JPG for image sharing.
Because the .pd_ extension is non-standard, standard online converters fail to process it, assuming it is an unknown proprietary format.
