About PAJ files

The .PAJ file extension primarily represents a Pajek Network Analysis Project file. Pajek is a specialized software tool designed for analyzing and visualizing extremely large networks. A .PAJ file bundles multiple network elements together, such as networks (NET), partitions (CLU), and vectors (VEC). Alternatively, some .PAJ files act as Artweaver document page files, created by Artweaver, which use the Microsoft Compound internal structure to store raster graphics data. Some ecological network models also use .PAJ through Ecopath with Ecosim. The major disadvantage of the .PAJ format is its strict proprietary nature. Pajek files are highly specific to the Pajek software ecosystem. Standard spreadsheet tools or text editors cannot read the complex multi-part project data. You cannot simply upload a .PAJ file to a standard web viewer and expect to see a graph. Artweaver .PAJ files are similarly locked down, functioning only as temporary or internal page streams within a larger document. Users typically need to convert .PAJ network files to CSV, TXT, or GraphML to share data with other analysts. For graphical output, exporting to SVG or PNG is necessary. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert externally, standard online converters often fail. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
