About P3 files

P3 files are legacy project schedules created by Primavera Project Planner, a dominant construction and engineering scheduling tool from the 1990s now owned by Oracle. While the industry has largely migrated to Primavera P6, many archival contracts and historical baselines remain locked in the P3 format.

A key limitation of P3 files is that the original software is a 16-bit application that cannot run on modern 64-bit Windows operating systems (Windows 10/11) without complex virtualization or DOS emulators. Furthermore, a valid P3 project is rarely just a single .p3 file; it typically requires a directory full of associated database files to open correctly. This makes sharing and viewing difficult for modern teams.
