About OVR files
The .OVR file extension primarily identifies a GIS Raster Overview file, a critical helper format generated by geospatial libraries like GDAL and software such as ESRI ArcGIS Pro. These files act as external sidecars, storing downsampled "pyramid" layers of a larger raster dataset (like a massive satellite image or aerial map). By pre-calculating lower-resolution versions, the software can render maps instantly at different zoom levels without processing gigabytes of raw data in real-time.
The main problem for users is that an .OVR file is not a standalone image. It is inextricably linked to a parent file (e.g., TIF, IMG, or JPG). Attempting to open an .OVR file in a standard photo viewer usually fails or displays an error, as the file structure is optimized for machine reading rather than human viewing. Furthermore, managing separate sidecar files can be messy; if the filename does not exactly match the parent, or if the parent is lost, the .OVR becomes useless data.
To resolve compatibility issues or share the map data, the best approach is to convert the parent raster dataset (utilizing the .OVR for speed) into a self-contained format. For editing and archiving, convert to GeoTIFF with internal overviews to eliminate the sidecar file. For web use or easy viewing, convert the data to WebP or PNG. For documentation and reporting, converting the map view to PDF is the standard solution.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OVR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted TFW, JP2, TIF, PNG, SVG, XML, IDX, JPG, ZIP, SPV, PDF, DAT and PKPASS files.
The OVR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OVR converter.
