About OV2 files

The .OV2 file is a binary database format used exclusively by TomTom navigation devices to store 'Points of Interest' (POIs). These files contain geolocation data - specifically latitude and longitude coordinates - paired with descriptive names for locations like speed cameras, gas stations, or custom destinations. Because .OV2 is a proprietary binary format, it is a 'black box' to most users; you cannot open it in a text editor like Notepad or edit it directly in spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. This is a common source of difficulty for users who want to modify their POI lists, merge databases, or transfer their saved locations to non-TomTom devices (such as Garmin units) or web-based services like Google Maps.

To make this data usable outside the TomTom ecosystem, conversion is essential. For editing, the best workflow is converting .OV2 to CSV (Comma Separated Values), which allows you to bulk-edit names and coordinates in Excel. For usage on other GPS devices or archiving, converting to GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is the standard. For visualization on Google Earth or web maps, converting to KML is recommended. Users also often find .OV2 files paired with BMP images, which serve as the custom map icons for the points.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OV2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted POI, CSV, TXT, ZIP, ITN, PNA, QZTP, OV1, KML and GPX files.

The OV2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OV2 converter.
