About OV2 files
The .OV2 file is a binary database format used by TomTom navigation devices to store custom Points of Interest (POIs). These files contain geographical coordinates (longitude and latitude) and text labels for locations such as speed cameras, gas stations, and restaurants. Originally designed to be opened with TomTom MyDrive or loaded directly onto TomTom hardware, the main disadvantage of the .OV2 format is its proprietary, closed nature. It is not supported by web browsers, nor can it be opened natively by modern smartphones or competitor GPS systems like Garmin. Trying to open it in a text editor results in scrambled characters. Users often need to share POI lists with non-TomTom users or import them into standard mapping tools. To make the data usable, you must convert it to universal formats. The best conversion targets are GPX (GPS Exchange Format) for maximum compatibility with GPS devices, KML for Google Earth, or CSV for viewing coordinates in Microsoft Excel. Conversion generally preserves coordinates and names, but custom TomTom icons will be lost. Because this is a compiled binary file, standard online document converters fail to process it. Only specialized GPS conversion software can extract the coordinates.
