About ORF files

The .ORF file is the proprietary raw image format used by Olympus and OM Digital Solutions digital cameras. Think of it as a digital negative; it contains the unprocessed data directly from the camera's sensor, preserving the maximum amount of dynamic range and color information. While this is gold for professional editing, it is a headache for general use. These files are significantly larger than standard images - often exceeding 20MB - and cannot be displayed by web browsers or most default image viewers without specific codec packs. Furthermore, because it is a proprietary format, you are at the mercy of software support; if you try to open a newer .ORF file in an older version of Adobe Photoshop, it likely won't render. To make these images usable for sharing, social media, or web galleries, you need to convert them to JPG or WebP. For professional printing or archiving without proprietary lock-in, converting to TIFF or the open standard DNG (Digital Negative) is the recommended workflow. Using an online converter allows you to bypass the need for installing heavy software like OM Workspace just to view or transform a quick snapshot.

The ORF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ORF converter.
