The .OPN file extension is used by three distinct systems: window manufacturing software, chess engines, and robotics. Primarily, it acts as a project file for Klaes window manufacturing software, storing complex design, material, and manufacturing parameters. Alternatively, it serves as a chess opening book file used by the Arena Chess GUI and Chessmaster to store thousands of pre-calculated chess moves. Finally, it functions as a proprietary robot system image file for Aldebaran Robotics hardware.
These files are highly proprietary and notoriously frustrating to manage. A major disadvantage of the .OPN format is its complete lack of native support in modern operating systems. Without an expensive Klaes license, a specialized chess engine, or specific robotics flashing tools, you cannot open, read, or edit the data. Chess .OPN files, for example, are compiled into binary code to load quickly, meaning standard text editors will only display garbled text instead of readable chess notation.
Because these are closed formats, standard online converters constantly fail to process them. However, Klaes .OPN files are structurally just standard ZIP archives. By converting them to ZIP, you can extract the underlying XML, images, or configuration documents. For chess files, converting the binary data to a standard PGN (Portable Game Notation) or TXT is necessary to analyze the games in modern web browsers or competing software.
