About OPN files

The .OPN extension is a classic example of a 'filename collision,' where one extension serves three completely unrelated industries: construction, chess, and robotics.

1. Klaes Window Manufacturing Project (Most Common):
For most users, an .OPN file is a proprietary project archive created by Klaes software, the industry standard for window, door, and facade construction. These files contain technical specifications, material lists, and 2D/3D project data.

The Problem: Opening these files typically requires a paid Klaes license, which can be prohibitively expensive for clients or contractors who just need to view a quote or dimension.
The Solution: A little-known technical fact is that many Klaes .OPN files are simply renamed ZIP archives. Users can often rename the extension from .OPN to ZIP to extract the internal XML data and PDF reports without any specialized software.

2. Chess Opening Book:
In the chess world, .OPN files function as binary opening books for software like Arena Chess GUI or legacy versions of Chessmaster. These files store millions of pre-calculated opening move permutations (e.g., the Sicilian Defense) to save the engine processing time.

The Friction: Because these are compiled binary databases, they cannot be edited in a text editor.
The Solution: You must use the Arena interface to load the book. To use this data elsewhere, export the moves to a PGN (Portable Game Notation) file via the GUI's export function.

3. Robot System Image:
Less frequently, .OPN files are system images for Aldebaran (now SoftBank Robotics) robots like Nao and Pepper. These are raw system dumps used for flashing firmware and are generally not convertible to standard document formats.
