About OPA files

The .OPA file extension serves multiple distinct purposes, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly (41%), it is a Microsoft Office configuration or "Policy Template" file - often named data.opa - used by Office 2007 and later versions to store installation activation tokens and user-specific settings. These files are proprietary, binary-encoded, and essentially "locked" to the specific machine or installation; they cannot be simply opened in Word or Excel despite belonging to the suite. A different but significant use (9%) is within Optimik, a cutting optimization software for carpentry and manufacturing. Here, the .OPA file is a project container holding board dimensions, material lists, and cut plans. Users frequently struggle because they cannot view these plans on mobile devices or share them with workshops that don't own the licensed Optimik software. Finally, the extension appears in legacy Oculus (now Meta) VR asset packages and obscure flight simulator maps.
