The .ole2 file extension represents the Microsoft Compound File Binary Format (CFBF), a complex "file system within a file" used heavily by older versions of Microsoft Office (97-2003) and Windows Installer. In the wild, you typically encounter this file in one of two frustrated states: as a temporary artifact left behind by a crashing application, or as a generic output from data recovery software (like PhotoRec) that identified the container structure but couldn't determine the specific document type.
Because .ole2 is a raw container format, Windows has no default application to open it. Double-clicking results in an "Open With" error because the operating system doesn't know if the container holds a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet, an MSI installer, or even a Thumbs.db thumbnail cache. It is a "black box" wrapper.
To make this file usable, you must first identify the internal streams (e.g., a stream named "WordDocument" implies it is a DOC file).
