Convert OLE2 to another file type
To convert OLE2 compound files to another format, you need Microsoft Office or other Data software.
Convert a file to OLE2
To convert other file formats to the "Compound Binary Container" file type, you need software like Microsoft Office or a similar tool.
About OLE2 files
The .OLE2 file is a container format based on the Microsoft Compound File Binary Format (CFBF). It stores structured data using COM Structured Storage, acting like a miniature file system with its own directories, sectors, and streams inside a single file. Primarily, developers and legacy systems use it to embed objects and link data across different applications. You can open or extract the internal streams of these files using Microsoft Office or specialized archiving tools like 7-Zip.
The main disadvantage of the .OLE2 format is its proprietary, closed nature. It is a legacy architecture that poses significant security risks, as malicious macro payloads and executables frequently hide inside its internal data streams. Web browsers and standard mobile viewers cannot read it natively. Users without an active Microsoft Office installation often cannot inspect the contents.
Whenever possible, you should extract the payload and convert .OLE2 containers into modern, open formats. If the file contains text data, target DOCX or PDF. If it holds tabular data, target XLSX or CSV. Note that converting a compound file often flattens the internal directory structure, meaning embedded objects, dynamic macros, or live links to other local files will be permanently lost.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert directly. Standard online converters fail because they cannot parse the complex stream-and-sector structure without native Windows libraries. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the embedded data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be successful.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OLE2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OLE2 file to TXT, PDF, DOC, DOCX, HTML, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, ZIP, RAR, JPG or JPEG, you can use Microsoft Office or similar software from the "Compound Document Data Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MP4, JPEG, MP3, HTM, GIF, DOC, DOCX, PNG, TXT, WAV, PDF or JPG files to OLE2, try Microsoft Office or another comparable tool in the "Compound Document Data Container" category.
The OLE2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OLE2 converter.
