1. Onyx Graphics RIP Print Job (Most Common)

Primarily, an .ONX file is a proprietary production file created by Onyx Graphics software (such as ONYX Thrive, PosterShop, or RIPCenter). These files are the lifeblood of the wide-format printing industry, containing processed raster image data, vector cut paths, color profiles, and nesting layouts customized for specific hardware (like HP or Epson large-format printers).

The Problem: These are "black box" files. You cannot open them in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or standard PDF viewers. They are locked to the specific RIP station and license that created them. Users often encounter these files when trying to recover lost artwork from an old print server or when a client mistakenly sends a production file instead of a proof.

For Proofing: Convert to PDF to view the layout without the expensive RIP software.
