About OMO files
The .OMO file extension primarily represents an Optimized Managed Object model, a proprietary binary file generated by Apple Core Data. These files are optimized, faster-loading versions of MOM (Managed Object Model) files, which define the data structure (schema) for iOS and macOS applications. Users most frequently encounter .omo files when exploring the internal bundles of apps like WhatsApp, often mistaking them for database files containing user data.
Crucial distinction: An .omo file contains the blueprint of the database (entities, attributes, relationships), not the actual user content (chats, photos). The actual data is typically stored in a sibling SQLITE file. Because .omo files are compiled binaries designed solely for the internal Core Data framework, they cannot be opened by standard text editors, image viewers, or database tools. Attempting to edit or convert them usually results in a corrupted app. For developers, tools like momdec can reverse-engineer them back to a xcdatamodel source file, but for general users, these files serve no practical function outside their parent application.
A secondary, rare use case is the OMake Object file, a build artifact generated by the OMake build system. These contain compiled dependency information and are similar to O object files in C++.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OMO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MOM, CRYPT, CRYPT14 and DATABASE_UUID files.
The OMO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OMO converter.
