A .crypt file is an encrypted SQLite database used primarily by WhatsApp Messenger to back up chat histories on Android devices. These files securely store your private messages on local device storage or cloud services. To natively open or restore them, you must use the official WhatsApp application on a smartphone linked to the same phone number and Google account.
Users often attempt to convert .crypt files because they want to read, search, or print their old conversations on a desktop computer. However, the format poses major challenges. It is a proprietary, heavily encrypted container designed specifically to prevent third-party access. Reading the data requires a unique decryption key file stored in the protected system partition of the Android device. Without root access to extract this key, the backup file is completely locked.
If you successfully extract your key and decrypt the database, the best conversion targets are TXT, HTML, or CSV. These formats make the chat logs universally readable and easy to archive on any operating system, though you may lose inline media elements like voice notes.
