About CRYPT files

A .CRYPT file is primarily an encrypted database backup generated by WhatsApp Messenger to secure user chat histories on Android devices. While these files contain valuable conversation logs, media references, and contact details, they are practically inaccessible in their raw form. The file is essentially an SQLite database wrapped in strong encryption (often AES), meaning it cannot be opened with standard text editors, Microsoft Excel, or database viewers without the specific decryption key (typically found in the /data/data/ directory of the rooted device). Users often encounter these files when attempting to restore messages or migrate data, only to find themselves locked out by the proprietary encryption. A less common but critical variant is a file locked by CryptXXX ransomware, which encrypts personal user data maliciously. To make .CRYPT files useful, they must be decrypted and converted. For reading or printing chat logs, converting to HTML or PDF is the best approach. For data analysis or migration, converting the underlying structure to standard SQL or CSV allows for import into other database management systems.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CRYPT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CRYPT14, CRYPT15, CRYPT12, CRYPT8, CRYPT1, ENCRYPTED, CRYPTMF, MCRYPT1, CRYPT7, JPG, PDF, TXT and DB files.

The CRYPT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CRYPT converter.
