About ODX files
The .ODX file extension primarily refers to the Open Diagnostic Data Exchange format, an XML-based standard maintained by ASAM. These files are the lifeblood of the automotive industry, used to describe the diagnostic capabilities of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) throughout a vehicle's lifecycle - from development to after-sales service.
While .ODX files are technically plain text (XML), they are notoriously complex and verbose. A single file can contain thousands of lines of nested tags defining Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and service parameters, making them practically unreadable in standard text editors like Notepad++. To interpret them meaningfully, engineers typically rely on expensive, specialized suites like Softing ODX Studio or Vector CANdelaStudio. This creates a significant barrier for stakeholders who simply need to review diagnostic specs without a $5,000 software license.
Common Conversion Needs:
For Documentation: Convert .ODX to PDF to create a fixed, readable specification for suppliers or regulatory compliance.
For Analysis: Convert to CSV or Excel (.XLSX) to filter DTC lists and parameters in a spreadsheet.
For Web: Convert to HTML to publish diagnostic trees on internal intranets.
Note: A secondary, less common use of the .odx extension is for Microsoft BizTalk Server Orchestration files. These are visual workflow diagrams saved by Visual Studio. If your file doesn't open with automotive tools, it is likely a BizTalk source file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ODX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ODX file to PDX, CDD, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF or DAT, you can use ODX Studio or similar software from the "Automotive Diagnostic Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to ODX, try ODX Studio or another comparable tool in the "Automotive Diagnostic Data" category.
The ODX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ODX converter.
