Convert OBT to another file type
To convert your OBT file to another format, you need Openbox or other Compressed software.
Convert a file to OBT
To convert other file formats to the "Desktop Theme Archive" file type, you need software like Openbox or a similar tool.
About OBT files
The .obt file extension is most commonly associated with Openbox, a highly configurable window manager for Unix-like operating systems. These files are effectively GZIP compressed archives containing theme assets - such as XML configuration files (themerc), images, and window decoration settings - used to customize the desktop appearance.
For most users, the main challenge is that standard operating systems like Windows or macOS do not recognize .obt as an archive format by default. This makes it difficult to view or edit the theme contents without specialized software like ObConf. However, because the underlying format is a standard compressed container (often a renamed .tar.gz or zip), you can typically "convert" an .obt file simply by renaming the extension to .tar.gz or zip and extracting it with tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR.
A secondary, less common use of the extension (approx. 12% of files) is as a data archive for Nintendo game systems. These are proprietary files containing game assets and cannot be easily opened or converted without specific modding tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OBT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OBT file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use Openbox or similar software from the "Window Manager Theme" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to OBT, try Openbox or another comparable tool in the "Window Manager Theme" category.
The OBT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OBT converter.
