About QAT files
A .qat file is a user interface configuration file used by Microsoft Office 2007 to store personalized shortcuts and command layouts for the Quick Access Toolbar. It is native to the Microsoft Office suite, with separate files generated for distinct applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Because it is a background settings file tied to an outdated software version, users often struggle to access or transfer their carefully curated toolbar layouts. The format is completely proprietary to Office 2007; double-clicking it does nothing, and it is not supported by standard web browsers. Furthermore, Microsoft abandoned the .qat extension entirely starting with Office 2010, rendering these older files obsolete unless manually migrated.
The best conversion targets are XML or TXT files, which allow you to safely read, share, or edit the raw configuration code. If your goal is migration to modern Office versions, you must manually rename the file to officeUI to make it compatible.
Because .qat files contain proprietary application-specific code rather than standard document text, traditional online converters instantly fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your QAT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert QAT file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use Microsoft Office or similar software from the "UI Toolbar Configuration Settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The QAT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our QAT converter.
