About OBS files

The .OBS extension mostly denotes a RINEX (Receiver Independent Exchange Format) Observation Data file or a Trimble TerraSync GPS field data file. These files store raw satellite tracking data, such as pseudorange, carrier-phase, and Doppler measurements collected by GNSS receivers. Other minor uses include Bruker OPUS spectroscopy blocks, US EPA AirNow data, and OpenTTD sound replacement sets. Professionals use tools like RTKLIB or Trimble Pathfinder Office to process these raw logs into accurate positional data. The main problem with .OBS files is their highly specialized nature. Raw RINEX or Trimble files require expensive, proprietary GIS software or complex command-line utilities to open. They are not human-readable by default and cannot be easily shared with clients or non-technical stakeholders who just want to see coordinates on a map. For data analysis and human readability, convert .OBS to CSV or TXT. If you need to visualize the spatial data in modern GIS applications or web maps, converting to GeoJSON, KML, or SHP is essential.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OBS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ODS, MKV, RTK, MRK, LCP, STC and CMBL files.

The OBS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OBS converter.
