An .obi file is an XML-based configuration file generated by Microsoft Outlook. Its primary function is to store local RSS subscription settings, feed lists, and folder sharing information. These files are stored deep within the local Windows AppData directory and work silently in the background to keep Outlook synchronized with external feeds.
The main disadvantage of the .obi format is its proprietary nature. While it uses standard XML encoding, the schema is unique to the Microsoft ecosystem. Users typically encounter this file when attempting to migrate their RSS feeds from Outlook to an alternative web-based RSS reader. Standard RSS aggregators require OPML files to import feeds and will outright reject .obi uploads.
Converting an .obi file directly into an OPML or CSV format is frequently requested but notoriously difficult. This file format is highly specific, and standard online converters fail to parse the custom Microsoft tags. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data natively.
