About NUT files

The .nut file extension typically represents one of three distinct formats: a Squirrel Script file, a NUT Video Container, or a proprietary game texture. Squirrel scripts are written in the lightweight, C-like Squirrel programming language and are widely used for game logic in titles like Apex Legends and Battle Brothers, often running on Valve's Source Engine. Alternatively, it can be an open multimedia container format developed by FFmpeg and MPlayer engineers, or a Nintendo Universal Texture used in Nintendo and Bandai Namco console games.

Working with .nut files is highly frustrating because the single extension masks entirely different binary and text data types. NUT video files lack hardware decoding and are natively unsupported by web browsers and default OS media players. Game textures are locked inside proprietary binary formats that standard image editors like Photoshop cannot open. Meanwhile, Squirrel scripts may be compiled into unreadable bytecode, requiring specialized decompiler tools to view the source.

To overcome these limitations, conversion is essential. For video playback and web hosting, convert the media container to MP4 or MKV. To edit game textures, extract and convert them to PNG or DDS. To read or modify game logic, open raw scripts in a text editor or convert them to TXT. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
