About VERSION files

A .version file is an overloaded extension primarily used by developers and software update systems to store release metadata. Depending on the software, these files contain versioning data, compatibility flags, or update server URLs. The format inside is rarely standardized. It is often a plain text file structured as JSON for Unreal Engine or Kerbal Space Program mods, XML for buildingSMART BCF standards, or simple string values for Android Gradle builds and Linux kernels. In Apple ecosystems, it may be a compiled binary property list (plist) used by the Messages app. The major disadvantage of the .version format is its complete lack of file-type association and predictability. Because the extension is generic, your operating system will not know how to open it, resulting in annoying 'Windows cannot open this file' prompts. Furthermore, some game patching systems deliberately rename standard executable files to .version to bypass security filters or prevent accidental execution during background updates. This makes manual inspection a guessing game and limits your ability to quickly read the data. If you are a developer or power user trying to debug a mod or an update, dealing with an unrecognized binary or raw JSON can be a headache. To make the data readable, edit-friendly, and universally supported, you should convert text-based .version files to .JSON, .XML, or .TXT. If it is a disguised executable, it needs to be reverted to .EXE.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VERSION file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SO, APK, PROTO, SKP, XML, ZIP, TTP, ANON and NUM files.

The VERSION Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VERSION converter.
