About NMO files
The .NMO file extension represents a 3D model and animation file utilized by the 3DVIA Virtools engine, originally developed as the Nemo File Format by Nemo Studio. These files function as "Behavioral Objects," storing a proprietary mix of 3D geometry, character rigging, textures, and interactive gameplay scripts. They were predominantly used in early 2000s video games developed by companies like Neko Entertainment.
Historically, developers created these assets using legacy software like 3DVIA Virtools Dev, often relying on specialized export plugins for Autodesk Maya or 3ds Max. Another entirely unrelated use of the .NMO extension exists in the Source engine game No More Room in Hell (NMRiH), where it acts as an objective graph data file placed alongside compiled BSP maps.
The core disadvantage of the .NMO format is its proprietary, closed-source nature and extreme age. Because the files contain binary game logic compiled specifically for the defunct Virtools engine, modern 3D suites like Blender or Unity cannot natively open them. Trying to extract assets directly from these files is a frustrating process that almost always results in broken animations, stripped textures, or missing script behaviors.
To make these legacy 3D assets usable today, they must be converted into standardized formats like FBX (for rigged animations) or OBJ (for static meshes). However, standard online converters will fail to process an .NMO file because they lack the proprietary Virtools SDK required to unpack the complex data structures.
Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the exact format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. While a flawless 1-to-1 conversion of obsolete game logic is practically impossible, our analyzer can often inspect the file, extract readable strings, and retrieve embedded media. If we detect a supported underlying mesh format, a partial extraction to modern 3D formats may still be achievable.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NMO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The NMO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NMO converter.
