The primary disadvantage of the .nksc format is its severely limited compatibility. It is a closed format. Industry-standard raw processors like Adobe Lightroom or Capture One completely ignore .nksc files, favoring the universal XMP sidecar standard instead. Furthermore, a .nksc file is practically useless on its own because it contains no actual image pixels - only text-based metadata instructions. If you share a .nksc file without the parent RAW file, the recipient will see nothing.
To make your edited photos visible to others, the ideal conversion targets are standard raster formats like JPG or TIFF. However, this "conversion" must be done by exporting the finished image directly from within Nikon's software. If you simply need to analyze the edit parameters, converting the sidecar to TXT or XML is the best approach.
This file format is difficult to open or convert externally. Standard online converters fail because only the original Nikon software can interpret the mathematical adjustments and render them against the original RAW file.
