About NRW files

The .NRW extension primarily indicates a Nikon Raw Image generated by high-end COOLPIX cameras (such as the P1000, P950, or B700). Unlike Nikon's ubiquitous NEF format used in DSLRs, .NRW files are specific to their bridge/compact line but still contain massive, uncompressed 12-bit sensor data. While this preserves maximum detail for editing, it can lead to major headaches: files often exceed 20MB, they appear "flat" or dark without processing, and they trigger the "Windows cannot open this file" error unless you install the specific Raw Image Extension or NX Studio.

A secondary, legacy use case involves Nokia mobile phones (Series 40/Symbian era). These .NRW files are often "glitched" temporary files that failed to process into JPEGs inside the phone. For these, standard viewers will fail completely.
