A .news file is a packaged daily news digest primarily utilized by the KVH NEWSlink service to deliver compressed maritime news updates to ships at sea. It is also generated by various newsreader applications to store offline articles and syndication data. Under the hood, the .news format is structured as a standard ZIP archive that houses internal HTML, XML, text, and image assets.
Despite its simple internal structure, the proprietary .news extension creates significant interoperability issues. Standard web browsers, mobile devices, and conventional document editors cannot open them directly. Users are typically locked into utilizing specialized maritime software or specific RSS newsreaders, which often require expensive subscriptions or dedicated hardware to operate. This lock-in prevents users from easily archiving or sharing critical news data.
