About NEO files

The .NEO extension is a notoriously ambiguous file format shared across several distinct, legacy ecosystems. Historically, it is most famous as an Atari ST raster graphic created by NeoChrome, an early image-editing program from the 1980s. These files store rigid 320x200 pixel art locked to a limited 16-color palette. Alternatively, the extension is used as a proprietary multimedia authoring source file for NeoSoft NeoBook (now VisualNEO), or as a ROM or save state for the defunct NeoRAGEx arcade emulator.

Modern software like Adobe Photoshop or standard Windows viewers cannot natively parse true Atari headers, presenting them as unrecognizable binary garbage. Furthermore, compiling or opening a NeoBook project requires the original proprietary software environment, which is highly restrictive. However, the most common frustration users face today is the "false NEO": nearly 23% of all files with this extension are simply mislabeled PNG or JPG images generated by legacy bulletin boards (like MangoBoard) or misconfigured download scripts.

To bridge this gap, you need a smart conversion tool. For authentic retro NeoChrome art, convert to PNG to preserve crisp pixel edges and exact colors without adding JPEG compression artifacts. For text-heavy NeoBook archives, convert to PDF. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser - our tool automatically strips false extensions and processes retro Atari formats without requiring you to hunt down ancient, out-of-date software.
