Extract text from MXML files

To convert other file formats to the "Event Log & UI Markup" file type, you need software like ProM Tools or a similar tool.
The .mxml extension is a source of frequent confusion because it serves three distinct, incompatible purposes. The most common variation (53%) is the Mining XML format, an older event log standard used by the Process Mining Group at TU/e for analyzing workflow data. These files are XML-based but often large and unwieldy, lacking native support in modern tools like Excel or Tableau without first converting them to CSV or the newer XES standard.
The second common type (28%) is an Adobe Flex (now Apache Flex) user interface file. These contain declarative XML markup used to build applications for the obsolete Adobe Flash Player. Opening these requires legacy IDEs like Adobe Flash Builder or IntelliJ IDEA, which is overkill if you simply need to view the code structure or archive the project. A third, critical variant (8%) is a Ship Loading Condition file generated by Navis MACS3 software; unlike the others, this is actually a compressed ZIP archive in disguise.
For Process Mining data, the best workflow is converting to CSV or XES for immediate analysis in Python or spreadsheet software. For Flex files, converting to PDF or a standard TXT file is ideal for archiving legacy source code without maintaining an IDE environment. If you suspect a Navis file, simply renaming the extension to ZIP often allows you to inspect the contents.
