About MWM files
The .mwm file extension represents two completely distinct, highly proprietary formats. Primarily, it functions as an Offline Map Data file used by the mobile navigation app Maps.me. These files contain heavily compressed OpenStreetMap (OSM) data optimized for offline routing, searching, and visual rendering on mobile devices. Secondarily, it is a Space Engineers 3D Model file created by Keen Software House for their sandbox game Space Engineers. In this context, it stores compiled 3D meshes, collision frames, and material data for the proprietary VRAGE game engine. Both uses of the .mwm format are severely restricted because they are closed containers designed strictly for internal software consumption. Map files cannot be natively edited in standard GIS software like QGIS, and users often wish they could convert them back to OSM or GEOJSON to extract local road data. Similarly, game modders frequently need to convert Space Engineers models to OBJ or FBX to edit shapes in Blender. Standard online converters fail to process .mwm files because they lack the highly specific decoding libraries required for the Maps.me rendering engine or the Space Engineers MwmBuilder compiler. Consequently, only the original application or dedicated game modding tools can properly read or export the embedded data.
