About MVB files

The .mvb file extension primarily denotes a Microsoft Multimedia Viewer Book. Developed in the early 1990s, this obsolete format was used to compile text, images, and audio for early CD-ROM encyclopedias like Microsoft Encarta. Another common use is for Mobile Video Bus surveillance recordings generated by Safety Vision Observer software, which stores proprietary transit vehicle security footage, often wrapped in a JetDB database structure. Lastly, a small number of .mvb files are simply JFIF/JPEG images created by the defunct Cogitum FotoAlbum Pro.

The main disadvantage of .mvb files is extreme obsolescence and proprietary locking. Microsoft's Viewer relies on 16-bit Windows architectures, meaning modern operating systems cannot open them natively. Safety Vision video files require specialized transit software and database configurations, preventing easy playback for legal or sharing purposes. FotoAlbum images are disguised behind a non-standard extension, breaking browser and image viewer compatibility.

For legacy Microsoft books, convert to PDF or HTML to rescue the text and archiving data, though interactive elements will be lost. For transit video databases, converting extracted streams to standard MP4 or MKV is essential for playback in VLC. If the file is a disguised image, convert it to a standard JPEG or PNG. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
