About MVB files
The .mvb extension primarily identifies the Multimedia Viewer Book format, a legacy hypermedia container developed by Microsoft in the early 1990s. These files were the precursors to modern compiled help files (.CHM) and were used to distribute electronic encyclopedias (like early Encarta versions) and corporate documentation. The main problem for users today is that .mvb files rely on the 16-bit Multimedia Viewer (mv.exe) runtime, which is completely incompatible with modern 64-bit operating systems like Windows 10 or 11. Opening them often requires setting up a virtual machine running Windows 3.1 or 95. Users generally convert these to PDF for archiving or HTML/CHM to make the content searchable again.
Alternatively, an .mvb file may be a proprietary Mobile Video Bus recording generated by Safety Vision surveillance systems, commonly found in bus and fleet vehicle cameras. These video files are heavily encoded and typically unplayable in standard media players like VLC. Users stuck with these files often need to convert them to MP4 or AVI for legal evidence or standard playback. Occasionally, .mvb may also refer to multimedia albums created by legacy software like Cogitum FotoAlbum, which are often just renamed JPEG containers.

The MVB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MVB converter.
