About MPO files
The .MPO (Multi Picture Object) format, standardized by CIPA, is a container for stereoscopic 3D images. It typically combines two standard JPG images - representing the left and right eye perspectives - into a single file header to simulate depth on supported hardware like the Nintendo 3DS or 3D televisions. While innovative for capturing depth, .MPO files present significant compatibility hurdles on standard 2D displays; most default image viewers will either display only the first frame (the "left eye" image), fail to render the file entirely, or require specific hardware to see the 3D effect. To share these memories on social media, print them, or view them on smartphones, users often need to convert .MPO files to JPG (extracting a single 2D frame), side-by-side PNG, or anaglyph formats. For creative use, converting them to an animated GIF (wigglegram) creates a simulated 3D effect viewable in any browser.
