A .mmi file can be one of several entirely different formats. Most commonly, it is a legacy saved email message from the obsolete Verimation Memo mail system, or a Music Macro Language (MML) score used in the MMORPG Mabinogi. It is also heavily used in specialized technical fields. For example, it can be a reference sequence alignment index for the minimap2 bioinformatics tool, an XML-based memory map info file in Xilinx Vivado, a 3D structural model for Midas Civil, or a digital map index for OziExplorer.
The primary disadvantage of the .mmi format is its extreme ambiguity. Without knowing the file's origin, the operating system cannot natively open it. Legacy Verimation emails are obsolete and unsupported by modern clients, trapping old correspondence. Mabinogi scores are locked to a specific game ecosystem. Midas Civil models and OziExplorer maps are proprietary and require expensive licenses.
Conversion options heavily depend on the file's true origin. If it is an email or XML configuration file, converting to PDF, TXT, or CSV is recommended for readability and archiving. If it is an MML game score, extracting the text to convert into standard MID (MIDI) is the standard workaround, though game-specific instrument data will be lost.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online tools fail to identify the underlying structure, blindly confusing binary genome indices with plain-text game files. Because many variations are proprietary, often only the original software can properly read or export the full data.
